Joshua D. Speer made the decision to become a U.S. Marine after the September 11th tragedy. In January of 2003 he left for Iraq as war became a reality. After six months of battle, the time had arrived for Josh to return home. On June 28th, Josh's family and his girlfriend traveled to Camp Lejeune NC in honor of his homecoming. Josh had previously told his girlfriend that upon his return he would put a ring on her finger. On July 3rd. Josh came home for the weekend. On Saturday night, July 5th, Josh took his girlfriend, Holly Coupe, home around 11:00PM. They discussed a wedding date with her mother and settled on Jan.1st. As he left he assured Holly that he would stop by the next morning at 7:30AM for breakfast on his way back to base.
Sunday morning came and Holly made breakfast for Josh. When the clock said 8:30AM and Josh had not arrived, Holly began to worry. She called his cell phone and it went to voicemail. Her mother called his house and was told that he left at 7:00AM. It was only a 20 minute ride between their houses.
Josh's family were soon to learn that at 7:00AM that Sunday morning Josh had been involved in an accident. He had ran off the road and overcorrected causing him to lose control of his vehicle. After leaving the roadway he hit some trees and was killed instantly.
This is a note written by Josh and is printed on the back of a gospel track, titled "Are You A Soldier For Christ?"
I live and I fight!
"for what?"
Sometimes I don't even know.
But one thing that I do know
is that the principles and the standards
for which the United States stands
for must always be preserved for future generations.
For these things, I am prepared to sacrifice my life,
and will do so willingly.
