Herbert Eugene Shaeffer, Jr. was born on March 23, 1945, in Portland, Ore. He is the first beloved son of Herbert "Gene" Shaeffer and Helen Darlington Shaeffer. His unexpected passing at home on Christmas Eve will remind the family forever of the promise and the sacred meaning of Christmas. He will be remembered for his service, sacrifice and dedication to his faith, his family and his friends. He had a great love for people and radiated love and concern for everyone he met. We will miss his cheerful and optimistic outlook on all aspects of life. He bought joy to everyone.
Herb grew up in Lander, Wyo., where he loved to hunt and fish with his Grandpa Elmer and his Uncle Bus Darlington. He could be found fishing the lakes and streams on any occasion, hunting in the mountains, or helping the critters he found in stress. He loved nature and the great outdoors.
Herb graduated with the class of 1963 from FCVHS in Lander, and never missed a class reunion. Some of his best buddies lived in Lander. He attended Lander schools from kindergarten through high school. After graduation, he attended the University of Wyoming. He married his childhood sweetheart, Sharen Smith, in Lander on August 6, 1966, taking her for the traditional run down Main Street in a wheel barrow. We will never forget this sight! Their marriage was later solemnized in the LDS Temple in Manti, June 3, 1970.
Together Herb and Sharen raised four beautiful daughters, Laurie, Melissa, Kimberly and Tammy. Seventeen grandchildren blessed his life.
Carpet installing moved us to Vernal. He quickly fell in love with the people and the dynamics of this valley, readily adopting Vernal for our family's new home. He was a member of the Glines 5th Ward. He was the first counselor in young men's and the varsity coach leader. He had a great love for Scouting and a greater love for the boys. He cherished his time with the high priest group and loved being an ordinance worker at the Vernal LDS Temple. He cherished the families that he was a home teacher too.
Herb was a member of the Vernal Lions Club and president elect of the Utah Bee Keeper Association. He will be remembered by the young people of our community as the "Honey Man" and his observation bee hive at the Farm Field Days. He had a true love of learning and worked daily to further his knowledge in every aspect of his life. He was a great advocate for junior livestock. He looked forward to helping his grandchildren with their hogs at the livestock show.
He loved watching his grandchildren play at their sports: His "pitcher" in baseball and all of his "princesses" in dance and in any of their endeavors brought joy to his life.
His special times were spent with his family including his nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Working, playing, teasing, visiting, watching sports, hunting, and fishing, trapping, and sharing his love and knowledge of the great outdoors with his grandsons and family were the greatest joys of his life.
He had many special people in this part of his life. Two of them that hold a special place in his heart are his eternal friend, Scott Allred, and his nephew whom he loved like a son, Ricky Andress. They both became members of our immediate family.
Herb retired from Chevron Oil Company and began another adventure in his life by becoming a Bee Keeper. He and his family enjoy working with Herb's Honey. It is a sweet business! Herb was currently employed at BHI and immensely enjoyed working with fellow workers.
This year, Herb spent Christmas in Heaven with his Heavenly Father and other loved ones who have passed on before him. He will make preparations and anxiously wait for his eternal family to join him.
He leaves behind his sweetheart and eternal companion, Sharen and his beautiful daughters, Laurie, Missy, Kimmy, and Tammy, four wonderful son in laws, who he considered to be his very own sons, Scott Treat, Dennis Anderson, Tell Sharp, and Clay Sheffer, his beloved Grandchildren Camden. Lauren, Olivia, MacKenzie, Samauree, Savanah, Syree, Slade, Sabreya, and Saliah, Jera, Aleena, Merek, Wrexten Herbert, Samantha, Kortlyn, and Jessley; also three siblings, Sharon Sanderson (Jim) of Grand Junction, Colorado, Rebecca Dennis, (John) of Syracuse, Utah., and Brent Shaeffer (Kerry) of Casper, Wyoming. He also leaves behind his loving inlaws, LaMar and Nelda Smith, and his Sister in Law, Mary Earl (Chuck), of Spanish Fork, and many beloved nieces and nephews!
He was preceded in death by his fourth son, Douglas LaMar, and his parents, Gene and Helen Shaeffer, and a sister, Laura Mary.
Herb leaves behind a Legacy of the love of learning, service, work ethic, building and creation. His love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his selfless service to his neighbors and fellow man has created memories through his example that will last his family through eternity. Herb was blessed with the gift of Charity which he lived by example in this life and we are sure will continue to life in the life beyond. Through his death, many lives will continue to be blessed through the Organ Donor Program.
The family would like to thank the Emergency Response Crew, and Dr. Daniels and the staff on duty at the Ashley Regional Medical Center. Also the devotion of neighbors, friends, and family who assisted us on Christmas Eve will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt thanks to all for the continuing love and support that has lifted and carried us through this life event. It will never be forgotten!
