Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, a daughter of the late Joseph Pinto, born in Lisbon, Portugal and Mary Viera, born in St. Michael, Azores, Portugal, she lived most of her life in New Bedford. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Fairhaven.
Irene balanced part-time work while being a homemaker for her four loving children and husband. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Irene loved her home and the memories of all the holidays, birthdays and dinners hosted there. She was a talented, self-taught woman who loved to garden, read, sew, craft and decorate her home for the holidays. Rarely one to follow a recipe, she was outstanding in the kitchen and her amazing chocolate chip cookies and apple pie will be missed by many.
Despite refusing to board a plane ever again after a turbulent flight home from the Bahamas, she did enjoy travelling and continued to do so by taking road trips to Florida as well as some cross-country trips to visit family. Irene and Gil were animal lovers and had provided a loving home to many pairs of cats over the years, most recently her cherished Mittens and Sassy. Irene will also be remembered for her great sense of humor.
She is survived by her four children, Edward Gagnon and his wife Jane of Dallas, TX, Melanie Pattinson of Cranston, RI, Robert Gagnon of Boston, and James Gagnon and his wife Maggie of Swansea. She had five grandsons and three great-grandchildren; Thomas Pattinson, his wife Amanda and their son Cooper of VA; Neil Pattinson and his fiancé Mark Mata of RI; James Gagnon, Jr and his wife Jackie and their children Hailey and Austin of MA, Matthew Gagnon of MA, and Jonathan Gagnon and his wife Maria of MD. She is survived by one brother, Peter Pinto and his wife Dorothy of Fairhaven; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven siblings.
A memorial honoring Irene's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. For an online tribute: www.rock-funeralhome.com.
