Born January 13, 1926, he was the son of the late Alfred C. Huffer and Otilia Pearce Huffer of Boonsboro, MD. He attended public schools in Washington and graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1943. On graduation, he served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II with principal service in anti-submarine patrol in the North Atlantic aboard the USS Cherokee, ATF-66.

He attended Franklin & Marshall College, graduating in 1949 with Science Degrees in Sociology and Psychology; later earning graduate diplomas in Business Administration at the University of Virginia and the USPS Executive Institute in Bethesda, MD.

In business with his father, 1949-1959, he was commissioned Postmaster in Boonsboro, 1954-1969. He then served as Postal Service Officer in Cumberland and Baltimore, MD. During Postal Reorganization in 1973 he was made Chief of Training in Washington, DC and Director of Postal Employee Development Centers to promote elevation from within the USPS from the beginning level to higher ranks. He then became Sectional Center Postmaster at Charlottesville, VA; Salisbury, MD; Greensburg and Erie, PA. Mr. Huffer retired in 1984 with outstanding commendations. He also served as President of the National Association of Postmasters, 1958-1959.

As a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Salisbury, MD, he served as Board Chairman, President of the United Methodist Men and other positions. He was a President of the Boonsboro Lions Club and later a member of Salisbury and Greensburg, PA BPOE, Erie Rotary Club and Salisbury Exchange Club. He also served for several years on the Washington County Library and as President of the Wicomico County Library Board, 1988-1990.

A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a long-serving Secretary and Treasurer of Wicomico Lodge-91, co-founder and Secretary of the Masonic Temple Charitable Foundation and Lodge Board of Trustees. He was Mason of the year for 1986 and 2001. He was also a member of Salisbury Scottish Rite and Boumi Temple, Baltimore.

Mr. Huffer was married for forty years to Juanita Manious Huffer, a Registered Nurse who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She died in 1986. He is survived by their son, Andreas N. Huffer and his wife Rebecca Ann Huffer of Hagerstown. He was predeceased by their daughter, Lisa Marie Harbaugh, 66, who was married to Rev. Gregory P. Harbaugh of Salisbury and died in 2020. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Andreas N. Huffer, Jr. and Jessica Ann Huffer; and predeceased by his grandson, Zachary P. Harbaugh, who died in 2021. In addition, Mr. Huffer has several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece, Marcia Ellen Swain of Hagerstown. Mr. Huffer was also pre-deceased by his sister, Doris Hutton and her husband, Henry; his sister, Eula Swain and her husband Mark. Mr. Huffer was also pre-deceased by his companion of many years, Anna Lee Trader of Salisbury, and is survived by her daughter, Sherri Trader Hynes.

Mr. Huffer's remains have been donated to medical science. Arrangements are being handled by Bounds Funeral Home in Salisbury. A Memorial Service will be held Friday April 29th, 11:00 AM at Bethesda United Methodist Church, 406 N. Division Street, Salisbury, MD. Interment at Wicomico Cemetery will take place on a later date to be determined by the family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bethesda United Methodist Church.
