A LETTER ON JOHN ROBERT JOHNSON, SON OF WILLIAM AND ANNA JOHNSON included the following information furnished by Imogene Shafer Hanson

John Robert Johnson, son of William and Anna Johnson, was born Feb 11, 1886 at Guide Rock, Nebraska. He passed away at his home southeast of Lone Star, KS on Jan 10, 1961 at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 30 days.

In the year 1892 a terrible drought hit the state of Nebraska. Within 3 days the hot winds burned the crops to a crisp. Heavy hearted and not knowing what to do or where to go, and with provisions running low, they loaded their few possessions, including a few head of livestock, in their covered wagon and headed East. They stopped for the winter 1/2 mile north of the Riverside School house near Lawrence, KS on the place where Callery plant is now located. There his father found work, and instead of wages he received food for his family. While there, Rob and his older sister started school at the Riverside School.

In February of the next year, they traded their horses for a track of land southeast of Lone Star and built a small cabin. As Rob and his mother cleared the land, his father hauled wood to Lawrence to sell for provisions.

With love for one another and a great determination, they progressed each year. God blessed this pioneer family with good health and strength, and in 1909 they built the present home.
