US Congressman. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar Association in 1858, commenced law practice in Marshfield, Missouri and was Laclede County attorney in 1859. During the Civil War, he was commissioned an officer in the Webster County Home Guards, later serving as Colonel and commander of the 24th and 46th Missouri Volunteer Infantries. After the war he was a circuit attorney in 1865 and circuit judge of the fourteenth judicial circuit of Missouri, 1866 to 1883. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Missouri's 13th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1883 to 1885, then from 1891 to 1895.
