Pinckney Dispatch, April 30, 1903:
Ira V Reeves was born in Orange Co. N Y, Aug. 27, 1829. He was the eldest of a family of 10 children of which 5 survive him. He came to Michigan with his father in 1836 and soon afterwards moved to the farm where he has resided for the past 65 years. In 1849 in company with his father he braved the dangers of an overland journey to California returning two years later by way of the Isthmus. His life since that time is well known to all. Of a retiring nature he became a student of nature and spent his declining years of his life with his books and flowers and it may be said of him that his life was as pure and beautiful as the flowers he loved so well. His Masonic life began in 1866 when he became a Master Mason of the Livingston Lodge at Pinckney of which society he has ever since been a loyal member. He became a Knight Templar in Jackson commandry in the early 70's and was one of the oldest members in the county. As the sun sank to its rest Friday April 24 his spirit departed for that peaceful harbor where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary shall find rest.
Funeral was held at his old home Sunday, a large attendance of Masons and friends were evidence of the esteem in which he was held by them. He was buried with Masonic honors conducted at the grave by brother E A Stowe of Howell assisted by the Livingston Lodge of Pinckney. The immediate relatives of the deceased were all present--Mr & Mrs C V Van Winkle and Kirk Van Winkle of Pinckney, Mr. and Mrs. L D Brokaw and daughter Kitsie and Mr & Mrs A T Mann & son, all of Howell, Mr & Mrs L W Reeve of Lansing, Mr & Mrs Horton Reeve and Mr & Mrs Robert Matier all of Stockbridge, Mr & Mrs F W Allison of Putnam, Mrs A C Maxwell of Bay City and Howell Reeve of Stockbridge.
