Chester A. Slate, age 94 of Hendersonville, TN died February 6, 2016, born May 23, 1921 in Athens, AL and graduated from Athens High School.

Chester is preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Marie Pardue, the mother of his two children, Dr. John C. Slate (Barbara) and Marie Slate. After 37 years of marriage she died of cancer. He met and married Ellen Russell Smith, a Christian lady, and they were married for 23 years until his death.

He was devoted to his grandchildren. John's children are Scott (Lisa) Slate and Mandy Slate. Marie's children are Jenny (Chris) Tate, Mark McMahon and Katie (Jason) Blair, along with 14 great-grandchildren.

Chester loved Ellen's daughter, Melanee (Jim) Bryan and her children, Dr. Cristin (Jay) Lewis, Jennifer (Bo) Adams and Will McPherson III, who is deceased, and four great-grandchildren.

Chester entered the 8th Air Force in 1942. After training in England he flew in 31 combat missions over Germany, France and Poland and received several honors and medals for his brave and courageous service, including 4 Oakleaf Clusters, 3 Bronze Stars, and The Distinguished Flying Cross.

Chester's years of work experience included ownership of a Texaco Service Station for several years, and later head of the body repair shop at a Buick dealer. Last place of employment was with The Tennessean. He took pride in doing his best.

Chester was a man of integrity, a blessing to his family and others. He said that his greatest blessings were his combat survival and a long, happy life provided by his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Arrangements at Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5110 Gallatin Rd, Nashville, TN. Service at 12pm Thursday February 11, 2016. Visitation at 10am February 11.
