Dean Herbert Allred was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1931. His parents were Orson Parley Allred and Florence Rosealtha Butler Allred. He was the sixth of eight children. In high school, he excelled in playing the trombone and the bass, and was very physically active. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in El Paso, Texas, New Mexico and Mexico and then joined the Air Force. While studying at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois, he met his future wife, Charlotte Waidmann. They married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1954. They travelled to the UK shortly afterward. Dean served for over twenty years as an Air Force aircraft radio repairman, and later as an operations data analyst. Besides the UK, he served at Johnson Island, and Australia, with stateside duty in Washington state, Florida, and retiring as a Master Sergeant in Lompoc, California. He worked as a civilian on the base in Lompoc for twenty more years, retiring in 1996. In 1998, he and Charlotte served as ordinance workers monthly in the Los Angeles Temple for sixteen years, which is a remarkable legacy for his children and grandchildren. He was intelligent, funny, and loyal to his family, country, and his faith all of his life.
