Bonnie Ruth Stockard Slater
June 18, 1937 ~ May 8, 2022

Bonnie Slater, daughter of Clifford and Thelma Stockard was born in Lake Dallas, Texas, the seventh of eight children. A house full of kids in the country meant a house full of adventure and fun. Whether fishing together, playing kick the can, or swimming in the lake by their home near the dam, her family meant everything to Ruth.

Ruth graduated Lewisville High, Class of 1955, and married her high school sweetheart, Gerald Slater, January 25, 1957 in Carlsbad, California. After returning to Texas a few years later, they began their family and raised their three children in the north Texas area.

During the years of raising a family, Ruth returned to college and, with three kids in tow, completed her Bachelor of Science with Honors at Texas Woman's University in 1969. She taught elementary education, special education, and art in public schools and enjoyed teaching children as well as adults at the churches she attended. After her children left home, Ruth began painting, taking up oil and watercolors.

Her family and friends remember Ruth's love of singing. She sang everywhere, all the time, especially in the car while the kids were a captive audience, thus learning what seemed like hundreds of songs whether they wanted to or not! Sending birthday, get well, and "just because" notes and cards was another "specialty" of hers, making others feel valued and loved.

Reading to and spending time with her grandchildren brought Ruth much joy. Logan, Drew, Catherine, and Samuel could not have made her any prouder. But Ruth's greatest love was for her Lord. She frequently filled pages of journal entries with scripture, sermon notes, or prayers for her family and friends. Even with her eyesight dimming, she continued reading scripture, very recently completing the New Testament and Psalms. Though the family will miss her greatly, they are comforted knowing that as a woman of faith, that faith has been fully realized and is now sight. As a woman of hope, her hope is now complete. And as a woman of love, her love has been perfected.

Survived by her husband of 65 years, Gerald Slater; children, Stephen Paul Slater, Gerri Elaine Slater Hawes & husband Tom, Susan Elizabeth Slater Murre; grand children, Logan Murre, Andrew Slater, Catherine Hawes Spafford & husband Benjamin, Samuel Hawes & wife Natalie; brothers, Carl and Alfred and sister Ann Morriss.
A celebration of life will be held May 14, 2022 in Dallas, Texas. Visitation will be followed by a service with a brief graveside service at Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville.
