His educational career was in the Seneca Public Schools where he excelled in sports, especially in basketball. He was given the nickname of "Fritz" and was awarded a scholarship in basketball.
After graduation, John began his adult life in Topeka, Kansas. He moved there and sampled many work skills. His favorite job there being with Crane and Sons Office Supply. While in Topeka he was introduced to the love of his life, Sandra Kay Baker, and they were married in August of 1969. To that union two sons were born, Jeffrey Brian and Daniel Aaron.
The family then moved to Keats, Kansas, where Sandy resides today. They formed strong ties to Kansas State University, and John's life there was full of "Purple Power". He was a dedicated fan of the Wildcats and spent many hours watching his beloved teams. The front of their home still displays a large stone honoring K-State and its logo.
John and Sandy are members of the University Christian Church. His happiest years were spent as "My Dillon's Man". John handled many assignments during his years at Dillon's. He earned the name "My Dillon's Man" from the customers who he helped, supported and with whom he formed relationships while there. John spent over 30 years with the company. It was noted that customers would often stop John and ask for help even when John was off duty!
