Matilda was the daughter of Mathias and Sarah "Sally" (Peters) Gabbard. She first married John Sawyers, then two years after his death she married Thomas Sawyers, who was Johns brother. The children from the first marriage were: Martha (1842-?), Mathias (1845-?), America (1846-?), Thomas (1849-1900), Mary (1851-?), and John (1852-1853). The children from the second marriage were: Reuben (1854-1933), Elizabeth (1858-?), George (1857-?), Ran (1862-1936), and Woodward (1863-1917).
