"Col. John Howard, U. S. Army"

Harry S. Howard of this city has received word of the death yesterday of his brother, Colonel John Howard, U. S. Army, retired, at the Letterman Hospital, Presidio, San Francisco, Cal.

John Howard was the fourth son and the fifth child of the late Major General O. O. Howard, U. S. Army, and Elizabeth Ann (Waite) Howard. He was born at Washington, D. C., June 15, 1866. He was educated in the public schools and attended the University of California. While a student at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, N. Y., he was appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1891. Almost all of his service was in the 19th Infantry, being a captain in that regiment. He served in the Spanish-American War as a captain of Infantry. In 1898, at the request of General T. S. Peck of this city, President McKinley gave Captain Howard the special appointment as major of volunteers and sent him to the Philippines. He was a major when the World War occurred, after having had several years service in the Philippine Islands.

Col. Howard was then promoted to lieutenant-colonel and provost marshal of the 77th Division, stationed on Long Island; but, like many of the regular army officers who were called upon to expand the small army to a great volunteer and drafted force, he was overworked, broken in health, and forced to retire from active service, just as his 77th Division embarked for service in France.

Col. Howad moved to California in 1918 and resided in Los Altos. His first wife was Emily G. Britton of San Francisco who died in 1922. He married in 1923 to Miss Laura Bergeman of Los Altos, Cal., who survives him, as well as his brothers, Col. James W. Howard of Newark, N. J., Chancey O. Howard, libraian of the Pension Bureau in Washington, D. C., H. S. Howard of this city; and two sisters, Mrs. James T. [Grace] Gray of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Joseph [Elizabeth] Bancroft of Wilmington, Del. Col, and Mrs. John Howard will be pleasantly remembered in Burlington where they visited quite often during the residence of their parents here.
