From the Monday June 2, 1890 Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle:

Mrs. Ann Smith, mother of the Smith Brothers of this city, died quite suddenly at her residence, in Market Street, on Saturday morning. She arose early as is supposed to take some medicine, and must have been stricken with apoplexy, as when discovered, shortly after eight o'clock, she was lying dead on the floor. Coroner Frost was notified, but did not deem an inquest necessary.

The deceased was eighty-two years of age, and was the widow of James Smith, who died about twenty years ago. She was born in Scotland, and with her husband emigrated to Canada, from which place they came to Poughkeepsie, about forty years ago. Mr. Smith opened a confectionery store in Market Street, a few doors north of the present place of business, which, though at first conducted on a small scale, rapidly increased, and the large building now occupied by the Smith Bros. erected. At the death of Mr. Smith the business was taken in charge of by his sons.

Mrs. Smith had enjoyed comparatively good health of late. On Friday she was riding with Mr. Andrew Smith and other members of the family, and then seemed to be in the best of spirits. Saturday night she complained of a pain in her side, and Dr. Otis was called, who prescribed medicine for her, but no serious results were feared. By her long residence in the city she was widely known, and her death will be universally regretted. She was a regular attendant at the Presbyterian Church, and the funeral, which takes place this afternoon at three-o'clock, will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Wheeler.

Six children were born to Mrs. Smith. They were the following in the order of their age: Mrs. Jeannette B. Eastmead, William W., James, Andrew, Rachel, and Belle Smith. The last named daughter died a number of years ago. All the others are living, and the sons are among our best known business men. For their success and usefulness they, and the community in which they live, are greatly indebted to the faithful efforts of the quiet mother who has now gone to her rest.

The bearers will be Mrs. Smith's six grandchildren, Messrs. Frank, Elmer and Charles Eastmead, and Arthur, Lemuel and Edward Smith
