MRS WILLIAM SMITH DIES IN 91ST YEAR
Mrs. Hulda Gilbert Smith, widow of William W. Smith, one of the founders of Smith Brothers, died at her home, 38 South Hamilton street, on Monday, following an Illness of some duration. She had been confined to her home for the past two years. Had she lived until March, Mrs. Smith would have celebrated her ninety-first birthday.
Mrs. Smith was born at Loch Berlin. N. Y., March 21, 1831, her maiden name having been Miss Hulda Maria Gilbert, a daughter of John C. Gilbert, who was formerly a resident of Columbia county. She and William W. Smith were married before the Civil War and resided In Poughkeepsie from the time of the wedding.
William W. Smith, a member of the firm of Smith Brothers, famous throughout the world for their coughdrops, was a prominent Poughkeepsie philanthropist. He gave extensively to the First Presbyterian church, the Old Ladies' Home, the Y. M. C A. and Y. W. C A. He also gave College Hill Park to the city. Mrs. Smlth was Interested in all the various philanthropies to which her husband contributed so generously. After his death, in November, 1913, she continued the work he had begun, and until ill health forced her to keep indoors never lost Interest in the various institutions. She was a prominent member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which was perhaps her favorite organization, and she was also interested In the work of the Women's City Missionary Society, the Old Ladles' Home, and the Young Women's Christian Association. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one son, Arthur G. Smith, and by two grandsons, William W. Smith, 2nd, and Robert L. Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from her late home, 38 South Hamilton street. The Rev. John McNab, pastor of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. The services will be private, in charge of Nelson L. Boice.
