Ella Ann West Atkinson of Young Harris, Georgia, age 88, passed away peacefully Friday May 20, 2022. Ann was born on June 15, 1933 to Jesse and Ella West in Athens, Ga.

Ann graduated from Morgan County High School in Madison, Ga. in 1950 and attended Young Harris College for 2 years. On June 28, 1952, Ann traveled to England to marry her high school sweetheart Robert Atkinson, serving in the United States Air Force, at the chapel on Burtonwood Air Force Base, England. After returning home from England, Ann earned a BSEd from the University of Georgia in 1958, MSEd from Mercer University in 1982 and SpEd from Georgia Southwestern in 1987. Ann first began her career as an educator in Bishop, Ga. and later taught at Crawford County Schools in Roberta, Ga. from 1975 to 1989 and at Muscogee County Schools in Columbus, Ga. from 1989 until retirement in 1995.

Ann was a member of the Dorcas Society as a student at Young Harris College, active alumni for many years serving as Alumni President from 1984-1986, class of 1952 coordinate member, and member of the Endowed Century Club.

Ann was a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church and active member of Faye Hoag United Methodist Women's Circle. She was also a member of Towns County Retired Teachers, member of the Old Unico Trail Daughters of the American Revolution chapter, and the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild.

Ann is preceded in death by parents Jesse and Ella West, daughter Ella Susan Atkinson, son Robert Atkinson Jr., daughter in law Lisa Barlow Atkinson, sister Patricia West Dent Krick, and brother Jesse West Jr.
