Sarah Elizabeth Burks 1839-1912 m.1 Aug. 13, 1860 (by James R. Vanzant, JP) in Webster Co., MO to Samuel Robert Atkins b. c1828 Edgar Co., IL d. July 27, 1864 (Civil War death)

m.2 (?) James K. Polk McHaffie b. March 17, 1846 Green Co., MO d. Jan. 5, 1923 Swan, Taney Co., MO
NOTE: There is a high probability Sarah was never married to James McHaffie. Nevertheless, they had three children.

Sarah Burks m.3 (Probably 2) March 7, 1875 to Thomas Todd b. 1850 d. 1910 Protem, Taney Co., MO; both buried Protem Cemetery, Taney Co., MO

STORY: Sarah was a much sought after mid-wife in the hill country around Protem and had a "record of never having lost a mother or a baby." Sarah was visiting Thomas' nephew, Perry Todd, of rural Rogersville, Missouri when she became ill with pneumonia and died there March 1, 1912. There was several inches of snow on the ground when her sons, Dick and Jacob, came in a wagon and took her body back to Protem for burial.
DEATH: Sarah Burks - Sarah's son, Henry Eli Todd (informant on mother's death certificate) makes the same mistake on the death certificate as did Dennis Burks (s/o William Benton Burks) by using an incorrect name of his grandmother. Henry, like Dennis Burks, also uses Ely instead of the correct Eli - most likely the fault of the person filling in the DC and not Henry. Henry also states his grandmother's name is Sarah Moss. Eli Burks and Elizabeth Betsy Moss are Henry's grandparents. I have never seen Elizabeth Betsy (Moss) Burks go by Sarah. She went by her middle name; Betsy.
