Ruth Hutchinson Tear, 86, of Salem, passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 14, 2008. She was an accomplished jazz pianist and as the leader of her very own Ruth Tear Trio, played at The Hotel Roanoke and The Greenbrier among others. Ruth also sang with the Freddie Lee Orchestra in the 60's and 70's. She recently played the piano for the Kiwanis Club of Salem, and was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church for over 30 years. She will be sadly missed by her family members including her son, Winston S. Tear & wife, Dianne; daughter, Laura A. Moore & husband, Johnny; sisters, Doris Hutchinson and Mae Raines; grandchildren, Tim Perdue & wife, Andrea, Lindsey Parr & husband, Mike, Jessie Trainum & husband, Zeke, and Natalie Stinnett & husband, Joe; great-grandchildren, Rose and Gabe Trainum and Caleb Parr; her two cats, Millie and Maggie; and many, many friends. A period of visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008, in the funeral home's chapel. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Roanoke. The Rev. David Gellert will officiate. The Tear family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
