In December 1876 Rosa's parents, George and Achsah, moved from Pawnee Creek, Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas to Bakersfield, Kern County, California with four of their children. In January 1877, because she was "sickly", Rosa went with her grandmother Lucy Kerr to stay for a while with Lucy's older brother Dr. Harvey Kerr in Broad Ripple, a NW suburb of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. This is most probably where she met her future husband, Joseph Yancey, a native of and resident in Broad Ripple at that time. Rosa eventually got healthier and rejoined her family in Bakersfield in January 1880. Lucy came to Bakersfield in 1884 and they are buried next to each other. Later in 1880 Joe followed Rosa to Bakersfield where they were married on 7 Dec 1882. He is buried on the other side of Rosa from Lucy.
