Walter is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nelda Nunez Austin. A son Jeremy Austin (Jennifer) and two grandsons, Ryan and Kyle Austin all of Fernandina. Five brothers Scott, Timothy, Bert, Ray and Jake; one sister Carolyn Austin. And Claudine Newton, a sister-in-law through marriage but a sister-in-heart. Two nephews Clay and Waco Renshaw, who "Uncle Walter" was a great influence on their lives.
Mr. Austin was a native of Fernandina Beach Fl. He began his career in the US Army in 1963. He served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam and in 1979, due to health reasons, he received an honorable discharge.
Walter was a great outdoorsman who loved hunting but was an avid fisherman. He was often seen on the Amelia River, Lofton Creek or the Nassau River depending on the season and what fish were biting.
Walter A. Austin, SFC US Army (Ret) was laid to rest at Green Pine Cemetery with full military honors during a private ceremony with family and a lifelong friend, Nick Deonas.
