Christian was the second of four children, and the oldest son, born to Frances Engler and Charles Frederick Gommer. In 1898, he married Laura Engler in Dorrance Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The couple raised ten children: Susie, Ida Irene, William, Harry, Florence, Ruth, Leona, Charles, Warren, and Clarence. He was employed by the Lehigh Wilkes Barre Coal Company as a fireman.
