THE LATE ISAAC BAUM.
Four of His Sons, All Twins, Were Bearers at the Funeral.

NORTH SYRACUSE, Jan. 23. – Isaac Baum of this place, who died on the evening of January 13th, was born in the town of Minden, Montgomery county, on January 1st, 1808. He and his parents moved to the town of Danube, Herkimer county, during the next year. He married Miss Mary Dockstater of that town on the 10th of July, 1831. In 1834 Isaac Baum purchased a farm in Cicero. In the spring of 1835, he was elected trustee of the school and gospel lot of Cicero, and served in that capacity till 1841. In 1843 he was elected Supervisor of the town of Cicero, and was re-elected in 1846 and again in 1847. He was appointed Enumerator at the town in 1851. In 1855 he was appointed again to the same office. Elias W. Leavenworth was Secretary of State at the time. In 1859 he was appointed Superintendent of the Onondaga Penitentiary and was reappointed in 1861. After leaving the Penitentiary he moved to the town of Salina, and from there he moved to the town of Clay, where he lived in to the time of his death. Mr. Baum was an active political worker as a Whig and as a Republican. When A. P. Granger was nominated for Representative in Congress, he offered to give a site banner worth $--- to the town which would give him the largest majority. The General presented it to Mr. Baum on behalf of the town of Cicero, that having been the banner town. Mr. Baum’s family consisted of a wife and ten children – four daughters and six sons. A daughter died on November 22d, 1855, a son, on July 23d, 1879, and his wife on December 26th, 1886. The other children are Mrs. R. Ferguson, B. F. Baum, Mrs. C. Benedict, Amenzo and Alonzo Baum, twins; Miss Augusta Baum, and Granville and Melville Baum, also twins. Mr. Baum was always been one of the most enterprising men of the town. He retained all of his faculties in a remarkable degree till his death. There was one feature connected with the recent funeral of Mr. Baum that was of unusual interest. The four bearers of his body were the two sets of twins who have been already mentioned. It is by no means a common thing for two sets of twins to appear in the same family, and it is yet more uncommon for them to grow to maturity. Eight years ago, these same men acted as bearers at their mother’s funeral.
