Ordained a deacon by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo in 1982, He had been coordinating chaplain at the prison since 1991. He also was a workers' compensation claims adjuster.
He was a recipient of the Franciscan Lay Award for Service to the Community.
His past assignments as a deacon were at Visitation, St. John the Baptist and St. Francis Xavier parishes in Buffalo. He served on the Diaconal Advisers Board and was a founding member of the Little Portion Friary, the homeless shelter on Main Street.
He was spiritual director of Buffalo Cursillo and a board member of Friends of the Night People and the prison ministry Kairos. He also was an officer of the Buffalo Irish Center and Gaelic Athletic Association.
The Buffalo native graduated from Bishop Timon High School in 1955 and Canisius College in 1967.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Catherine M.; two daughters, Eleanor of Snyder and Anne-Marie Dobies of Kenmore; and two brothers, Leo and James, both of West Seneca.
A Diaconate Mass was offered Sunday evening and a Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5480 Main St., Williamsville. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
