Zelma A. Lias passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Saturday June 4, 2022 in Nacogdoches, TX. She was with family, friends, and the loving staff at The Arbor Assisted Living facility.
Zelma was born on November 22, 1933 in Big Run, PA to Merle Airgood and Hulda (McCracken) Airgood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Edward J. Lias, who passed away in 2019. Her surviving family includes her sister, Grace (Airgood) Yamakawa of Tokyo, Japan; her daughter, Susan (Lias) Manges of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; her son, Stephen Lias of Nacogdoches, Texas; and six grandchildren.

Ever ready with a smile and unending generosity, Zelma was a blessing to everyone who knew her. Over her eight decades, she lived in seven states and, although she worked primarily in the home, she always found a way to serve others by volunteering in churches, photography clubs, libraries, and much more.

Innately creative and artistic, Zelma found early success through music. Her obvious talents at the piano were a gift to many churches and schools, and the halls of her home echoed with Debussy, Beethoven, Joplin, and Rachmaninoff. Later in life, she discovered photography, and her prints shimmered with the same musical beauty as her playing. When she and her husband moved to Nacogdoches in 2005, she quickly became a fixture at the Nacogdoches Photographic Association, for which she published the newsletter for many years.

A woman of deep religious belief, her life was a textbook on the fruits of the Spirit. She exuded love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She rejoiced in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and friends, and she never missed an opportunity to encourage or uplift those around her. She was summed up beautifully by one of her closest friends who treasured "…her creative mind, her love for the beauty in nature, her love of music, her interest in photography (and her remarkable ability to capture the beauty she sees), her respect for other people, and her love for her family."

An informal funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 4pm. at Cason Monk- Metcalf Funeral Home, 5400 north street Nacogdoches, Texas 75965. The family would love for those who knew Zelma to consider sharing a nice or meaningful memory as we celebrate her life, her quiet impact, and her passing into the Lord's hands. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 3:30pm until the service begins. A private burial will follow.
