Bernard Herbert Waidmann was born 7 April 1907, in East St. Louis, Illinois. He was the oldest of six children. His parents were Bernhard Gustav Waidmann and Caroline Dettenmeier Waidmann. His father died when he was 16 years old, and his mother died when he was 21 years old. He became responsible at that time for raising his younger brothers and sister. He married Helen Strauser on 23 September, 1935, in Bourbon, Missouri.
He and Helen raised three children in Fairview Heights, Illinois; Charlotte, Melvin, and Madelyn. He built their home in that place. He worked many years as a millwright for Pfizer in East St. Louis. At one time he was the President of the Chemical Workers Union. He was a volunteer fireman, and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. His grandchildren remember him fondly.
