Jeffrey Alan Mattes, age 70, of Monroe passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at SSM Health Hospice Home in Monroe, surrounded by his family. Son of Kenneth and Beatrice (Hackbarth) Mattes, he was born on September 5, 1951 in Manitowoc County. He attended grade school at St. Peter's Lutheran School in Collins, WI and graduated from Valder High School in 1969. Jeff later attended Career Academy for Broadcasting in Milwaukee. Jeff married Diane Boeckman on June 10, 1972 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manitowoc.

Jeff, a third-generation licensed cheesemaker, has been manufacturing cheese for 45 years. He is certified as a Master Cheesemaker for Parmesan, Romano, Asiago, and Fontina cheeses; he also worked on artisan cheese. Jeff received awards from the Center for Dairy Research for the cheeses he made. His love for cheesemaking started as a child in the family home located on the floor above the cheese factory. Jeff and his wife moved to Monroe in 2016 to further Jeff's employment with his Master Cheesemaking skills. They quickly made many wonderful friendships in the area. Jeff retired from Chula Vista Cheese in Monroe.

He had unending love for his children and grandchildren; loved being their dad and grandpa. He also valued the bonds created with his nieces and nephews.

Jeff was a WIAA football and baseball official for 30 years. He always looked forward to officiating games with his very close friends from Manitowoc. Starting in 1978, Jeff, along with his brother and father, were season ticket holders for the Green Bay Packers where many great memories were made with several of his family and friends. Jeff also treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren while often hosting them on Wisconsin Dells vacations at Christmas Mountain.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Theodore (Lisa) Mattes of Tomahawk and Timothy (Sarah) Mattes of Middleton; grandchildren, Ryder, Halle, and Avery; step-mother, Laverne Mattes of Manitowoc; brother, James (Joan) Mattes of Valders; sister, Laurie (Tim) Argall of Hayton; mother-in-law, Delores Boeckman; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Patrick) Walsh, Janet (Gregory) Keil, and Linda Schiesl; brothers-in-law, James (Ann) Boeckman, Mark (Susan) Boeckman, and Brian (Michelle) Boeckman; and further survived by nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Beatrice; and father-in-law, Robert Boeckman.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe. A Christian Mass will be held at 11:00 AM with Father Tafadzwa Kushamba officiating. Entombment will take place at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc, at a later date.
