Elmo Lee Shepherd Sr., 89, Ottawa, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa.

He was born June 22, 1918, to John Elsom and Edna Marie (Coleman) Shepherd at North Garden, Va. He graduated from Lane High School in 1937.

He married Charlene Bump March 24, 1940, in Paola. She survives.

He lived in Lane much of his life, moving to Ottawa in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier Bunker Hill as an ammunition specialist, attaining the rank of seaman first class. His tour of duty included the Pacific Theater.

He worked as a foreman for the Kansas Gas Service Co. for 35 years.

He was a member of the Gas Service Retirees Club and a former member of Ottawa Lodge 18, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.

Survivors also include two sons and their wives, Elmo Jr. and Judy Shepherd, Lawrence, and Charles T. and Elizabeth Shepherd, Kannapolis, N.C.; granddaughter, Melissa Henley, Tulsa, Okla.; grandsons and wives, Randy and Michelle Shepherd, St. Petersburg, Fla., Barry and Tiffany Shepherd, Mission, and Mark and Christina Shepherd, Eudora; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.
