He was a graduate of Greenville High School, Furman University, and Duke University School of Law. He practiced law in Greenville County for over 52 years and was a former president of the Greenville County Bar Association.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Humphries Dillard, and a brother, Lt.(j.g.) B. F. Dillard, Jr., who died as a fighter pilot in the U. S. Naval Air Force in World War II.
He is survived by four children, Leslie D. Williams of Camden, SC, Margaret E. Dillard, of Crofton, MD, Mary Foster D. Cox of Camden, SC, and John M. Dillard, Jr., of Charlotte, NC; and eight grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held at the family plot in Springwood Cemetery.
