Our beloved husband, son, brother, cousin, nephew, uncle, and friend, Tyson Colby Brummett, passed from this life, doing what he loved, long before we were ready to say goodbye. His soul went to soar with the angels the morning of Friday, July 3, 2020, following an airplane accident in American Fork Canyon.
Tyson was born in Columbus, Mississippi, on August 15, 1984. He spent a magical childhood in Salem, Utah, surrounded by his cherished siblings and cousins. He was raised by loving and supportive parents who instilled in him all the qualities that matter most in life. In his youth, he was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and earned the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Spanish Fork High School and continued his education and baseball career at Central Arizona College. He spent two memorable summers in Mankato, Minnesota, playing for the Moon Dogs in the Northwoods League. UCLA was his next stop, playing for the Bruins, where he earned PAC-10, All-Conference Honors.
In 2007, Tyson was drafted as a right-handed pitcher in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for seven years in the Phillies organization, where he debuted in the major leagues in 2012. He was traded to the Blue Jays organization for a season, and played his final season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 2014. A highlight of his professional career was the opportunity to play for the Tiburones de La Guaira in the Venezuelan Winter League, where his success led him to pitch in two Caribbean World Series.
Although greatly admired for his professional accomplishments, what Tyson valued most in life were his relationships. His heart was happiest when spending time with his family and friends. He always enjoyed the family reunions at Bear Lake and Moab. He had an unbreakable bond with his nieces and nephews and was adored by all children who knew him. He was often found playing with the kids and treasured his time mentoring and sharing his love of baseball. He had a gift for making children feel special and seen. His other loves were fishing, golfing, being outdoors, skiing, and of course, flying. Following in his dad's footsteps, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a pilot, in 2018.
On December 13, 2010, Tyson married the love of his life, his "Queen", Janette Shockley, who he adoringly called "J". She was his everything. There wasn't a day that went by that he didn't open the door for his sweetheart and make her feel that she would always come first. Their life was filled with love and deep connection. Together, they relished the moments spent laughing, dancing, traveling, and adventuring with friends, whom they considered their second family.
To know Tyson, was to love him. His huge heart, laughing eyes, infectious smile, and warm energy put all those around him at ease. He will be greatly missed by any who were fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janette Shockley Brummett; parents, Jeffrey and Kaye Christensen Brummett; sister, Mikell (Saia) Naulu; brother, Selby (Hannah) Brummett; nieces and nephews, the Shockley family, and countless other family and friends.
