Artist. He was a widely recognized Canadian artist who was particularly noted for his expertise in drawing and his unique box sculptures that were an extension of his paintings. He grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario and in 1955 studied at the Yale University summer school and the Albright Art School, later attending the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1958. Urquhart was also a highly respected professor and was the first artist-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario in 1960 and later teaching at the University of Waterloo from 1972 to 1999. The recipient of numerous awards and grants, his work is represented in important public and private collections around the world. Tony Urquhart was named to the Order of Canada in 1995 and was the winner of the 2009 Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, and the CARFAC Outstanding Contribution Award. In 2016, he was given an LL.D. by Carleton University, Ottawa.
