Niel is survived by his wife of 68 years Colleen (Baker) Hansen and his children Rebecca "Beckie"(Brook Bolley), Bonnie (Jon Mills), Mark (Kelli Mills), Lora, Lisa (Randy Nelson), 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Niel left High School for a short tour in the Navy as a medic. Upon his discharge he finished High School at J.W. His first teaching position was in Mattawan, Michigan, then at West Junior High in Lansing, Michigan where he taught Earth Science and was the Athletic Director. He then took a position at Dwight Rich Middle School teaching 7th grade Earth Science. During the 1970's, Niel became the Administrator for the Adult Education program with the Lansing School District and was instrumental in developing a High School completion program in the Ingham County Jail. Niel then went back to his love of teaching in the classroom at Dwight Rich until he retired in June of 1989.
The Lansing School District's Ebersole Environmental Center was a passion of his. Neil spent many weeks with elementary school campers leading environmental education programs. He was concerned about the health of our environment, the future of our planet, and had a passion to teach that to others.
Niel was a lifelong member at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, volunteered as a camp counselor and served in many leadership roles on various committees.
But Niel's greatest legacy is his love and devotion to his family especially his Grand Children and Great Grand Children.
