Nina was the youngest of the six known children of John A. and Estella Jeannette Hopkins. Nina's father died just four months after Nina's birth. Her family had moved from Humphries TN to Phillips Arkansas between 1876 and the 1880 census, where Nina was born. After her father's death, her mother took the children back to Humphries TN where she had help from the extended family to raise the children.
