Ernest Appling

Ernest Appling, 86, of Greenville died in the early morning hours of July 22, 2008, at the Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham with his loving wife by his side.

Mr. Appling was born July 17, 1922, in Keota, Okla., to Lem and Dora Appling; they preceded him in death. Ernest served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army. His unit saw action in five major campaigns before returning stateside. He married Thela Statzer in Celeste in 1977; they were married 31 years. Mr. Appling retired from the United States Post Office with 27 years of service. Mr. Appling can be best described as a good Christian man who loved his family, bluegrass and gospel music, and loved animals and watching birds. He was a longtime member of Ardis Heights Baptist Church and was also a member of the Bonham Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ernest was a very caring husband, father, grandfather and friend whose strength and courage lasted through his final days. He had a witty sense of humor and loved his country.
Ernest is survived by his wife; one sister, Josie Burrous; two daughters, Deborah Richardson and Joyce Compton; one stepson, Joe Jacobs; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Jean Elliot; one son, Eddie Appling; two brothers, Lemuel and Everett Appling; and one sister, Georgia Brandon.

Services for Mr. Appling will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Peters Funeral Home chapel in Greenville with Bro. Danny Gandy officiating. Burial will follow in Memoryland Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
