Margaret Ann Filz Achter

A full and interesting life came to a close on June 6, 2021 with the passing of our wife, mother and friend, Margaret Ann Filz Achter, 86. In her own words, here is what she would like you to remember about her. She was born on August 10, 1934 in Sheboygan, WI, the third of four children, to Michael N. and Marie Fistler Filz. She was the last remaining member of the immediate Filz family. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn, and their three children, Steven (Anne Williams) Achter of Green Bay and their child, Steph; Diane (Fritz) Stocker of San Diego, CA and their children, Frederick Charles (Charlie) and William (Will); and Laura Burkholder of Minnetonka, MN, as well as three nephews and three nieces and their families, and Glenn's sisters, Joanne (Harold) Krueger of Milwaukee, WI, Lois (Joel) Slabe of Hayward, WI, and Betty Davis of Arizona. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Howard, Michael and John, and their wives.
She was a 1952 graduate of Sheboygan Central High School and having always wanted to be a typing and English teacher, she embarked on that career by enrolling in teacher's college. Completion of that degree was interrupted by her marriage in 1957 to Glenn, the love of her life, at Holy Name Church in Sheboygan. They relocated to Wausau, WI in 1959 when Glenn began work with North Central Airlines as a Ticket Agent. After six years, Glenn's promotion then brought them to Green Bay, and in 1978 they built a house and became residents of Hobart, where they have resided ever since. Her fierce pride in her children was always obvious to anyone who knew her, and family events always took priority over any other gathering. She was also very proud of her husband and all he accomplished throughout his life, particularly through their 60+ years of marriage.
Starting as a teenager, Margaret was well-traveled, flying to Miami in 1947 for one of many family Florida vacations, and from Miami to Cuba in 1948. She and Glenn took many trips with friends and family, including week-long family gatherings in San Diego, multiple cruises through the Caribbean and to Hawaii and Alaska, many visits to the Cayman Islands, Las Vegas and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and a trip to England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as many driving trips throughout the United States.
Upon moving to Green Bay, Margaret immediately accepted the invitation to join the Welcome Wagon Thursday morning bowling league, where she met many new friends. In the following years, as a member of St. Joseph Parish, she joined their Altar Rosary Society, and became the first secretary in the parish office. As secretary, she spent much time typing the weekly bulletin and learning the Bishop's new bookkeeping system, which she then taught to other parish secretaries. She held her position at St. Joe's for eight years before moving to Dixon Realty as their front desk secretary. While with Dixon Realty, she seized the opportunity to open her own business, Friday's Girl, in 1978, which was later renamed Words, etc. She was also the manager of 1600 Shawano Avenue, the commercial building in which she had her office. Full retirement never occurred for her though, as quite a few customers still called on her creative and typing skills right up to the time of her demise. Throughout her years in business, she was able to use her typing and teaching skills after all, for the benefit of students, salespeople, printing companies, individuals, organizations, and many local political candidates.
Margaret actively participated in many social, community service and philanthropic organizations in Green Bay, where she often held an office or chair position, including the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, the Deaf Community of Pope John, the Guild of St. Mary's Hospital, the Lac Baie Girl Scout Council Board of Directors, a Cub Scout Den Mother, the PTA at Norwood Elementary School, and the Women of the Moose Green Bay Chapter 451. During the last 20-plus years of her life, she dedicated her efforts almost entirely to the Moose charitable organization, which she joined in 1997 and to which she was very devoted. In 1998 she took her first office with Green Bay Chapter 451 and served in various chapter offices and chairs, also working with fellow members on many projects and events. She was appointed by Women of the Moose Grand Chancellor, Barb McPherson, as Deputy Grand Regent for the State of Wisconsin in 2005. She was also appointed by her in 2017 to be a two-year member of the Women of the Moose Grand Council, an appointment which she considered to be the highest honor of her social and public service life.
Beyond all her work, public service and organization roles, Margaret loved to play cards, especially cribbage, and was very much the congenial and welcoming hostess, as evidenced by the many annual parties and impromptu social gatherings she hosted or organized. A favorite activity of hers was as commentator of local charity fashion shows. She was a good cook, baker, and joke-teller and will be remembered for making people laugh and smile. She will miss and be missed by many people from various areas and walks of life. She suffered through many physical ailments as gracefully as she could in her later years and hated not being able to do things for herself. She and the family are grateful for all the care and assistance provided to Margaret by her local health care providers and those at Unity Hospice.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 145 St. Joseph Drive, Hobart, WI, followed by a lunch reception at Thornberry Creek Country Club. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family, and online condolences can be made at Legacy.com.
