Manson

Ray Baker, 83, a longtime resident of Manson, passed away on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in the family orchard.

Ray was born Aug. 19, 1917, in Cairo, IL the son of John and Nettie (Waite) Baker. He moved with his family to Manson in 1929. He graduated from Manson High School in 1937. He worked at Holden Mine from 1937 to 1939.

On July 29, 1941, he was married to Alice Walker at Long Beach, CA.

During W.W. II, Ray worked as a welder in the naval shipyards in San Pedro, CA. In 1945, he and his wife moved back to Manson and purchased the family orchard from his parents. Besides operating the family orchard, he worked on the building of Rocky Reach Dam, Wells Dam and Grand Coulee Dam. While he worked in excavation, he excavated the site for Manson High School among several other projects in the Lake Chelan Valley.

In 1955, the family built a packing shed and cold storage facility. They packed their apples under the Baker Boy label until 1985. Ray set beehives for orchard pollination each spring until ill health forced him to slow down just a bit. He continued to operate the orchard with his son Arnold until his death.

Ray took great pride in telling people that this was his 55th crop to harvest. Ray's first love was the orchard. He also enjoyed spending time fishing with his sons and grandchildren and playing pinochle.

Ray was a member of the North Shore Bible Church in Manson.

Ray is survived by four sons, Roger of Seattle, John and his wife, Rosemary of Wenatchee, Jim and his wife, Kristin of Bellingham, Arnold and his wife, Melody of Manson; one daughter, Pam Morrical of Reno, NV; one brother, Luther Baker of Manson; and one sister, Oral DeWalt of Chelan.

Ray loved his grandchildren, Heather Waelbrock, Michelle and Bob Cole, Jonathan Baker, Larry Baker, Desiree' Baker, Raynor Baker, Bubba (Raygan) Baker and his great-granddaughter, Adrianna Reed and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Alice, after 53 years of marriage and a sister Vera.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at 10 a.m. from the North Shore Bible Church with Pastor Craig Rayment officiating. Private interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Manson Fire Department, Lake Chelan Valley Emergency Medical Services or North Shore Bible Church.
