He was born in Chandler, Oklahoma on August 9, 1937 to Jess and Ethel Hopkins. He was born at his Grandmother's home on the family farm. He was the oldest of 3 children and the only boy in the family.
While attending Putnam City School, he often missed the beginning of the school year traveling with custom cutters harvesting wheat. He graduated in 1955 and began working at Boecking Construction until he was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany at Grafenwoehr. Upon completion of his military service he returned home to Oklahoma City and returned to work at Boecking. He continued to work at the Caterpillar dealership for 40 years, where he drove a truck, hauled machinery and was a diesel mechanic.
John met his wife Sharon shortly after returning home and they were married in 1965. They lived on their family farm south of Guthrie, Oklahoma, where they raised beef cattle for 57 years. They have two daughters, Julie and Dixie.
