Richard Henry Bennett, identified as the man who wrecked a stolen taxicab during a police chase last week - has died of injuries he received in that accident, Pensacola police said Tuesday. Bennett, 31, of Moss Point, Miss., died Monday in Baptist Hospital from head and chest injuries. His body was taken to Faith Chapel Funeral Home. Police said Bennett was ejected from a taxi after it slammed into a light pole at Baylen and Garden streets during a police chase. The impact caused the vehicle to roll on top of Bennett and it took several officers to push the cab off him. Police said the chase began following a report that a taxicab had been reported stolen outside the Hideout Lounge, 130 Palafox Place. A description of the cab was broadcast to all police units and a plainclothes officer spotted the vehicle near Main and Jefferson streets. The driver, later identified as Bennett, sped away and the officer followed him several blocks before the cab crashed.
