Robert L. Heinbaugh
July 4, 1929 - June 29, 2022

Robert Leslie Heinbaugh was born July 4, 1929 in Belle Fourche, SD to Frank Leslie and Geraldine (Walton) Heinbaugh. He was one of six siblings; Laverne, Frank, Donald, Patty, Jerry and David. Born at the start of the Great Depression to farmers from the plains of South Dakota, one could easily guess that life would present some challenging times to him. But equipped by God with a shockingly stubborn nature and gifted mind, Bob seemed to not only accept the adversity of life but to take it on eagerly. Bob loved the land and its animals and was at his happiest sheep herding on the family ranch north of Belle Fourche. From the time he could walk, he could almost always be found a step behind his dad. Learning from and sometimes solving problems for his dad was something Bob took quite seriously all the days of his youth. Due to a badly broken leg in 11th grade (that had to be reset multiple times) and his dad needing help, he was forced to drop out of school to tend to the ranch. Not many things drew his attention or affections away from the ranch, but his love of his country was something that did. He joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served while stationed in Japan. While he enjoyed his time overseas, and was fascinated by the Japanese culture of the people he'd spent so much time around, his heart longed for the prairie and the life of a sheep herder.

In 1955, Bob was united in marriage to Shirley K. Newkirk. Welcoming 2 children to their lives proved to be one of Bob's most challenging yet rewarding endeavors yet. Following their marriage, Bob and Shirley ranched north of Belle Fourche until 1964 when they moved into town and later onto his prized homestead south of town which he faithfully tended to and explored.

Although he often referred to himself as a 'loner sheep herder', he could hold a conversation on any topic in great length. He especially enjoyed educating his grandkids and great grandkids on the history of his land and proudly displayed the relics and rocks that he had hunted. Bob was an avid reader and loved learning. He will especially be remembered for his sly grin and witty jokes.

Bob died at the age of 92 on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 at the Fort Meade VA hospital with family present.

Bob is survived by his son; daughter; 2 siblings; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; and his siblings, Laverne Prather, Don Heinbaugh, and David Heinbaugh.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday July 6th at Summit Open Bible Church in Belle Fourche with the burial taking place at Black Hills National Cemetary at 2:30 pm with military honors by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.
