FAMILY FACTS:
Jacob Pritzius was born December 15, 1828, in Bristerschred, Plalz, Bavaria, Germany, the first child of Johann Heinrich (Henry) Britzusand and Catharina Kutcher. (Parish records) The family emigrated to the United States in 1832-1833, settling in Butler County, Ohio. In the late 1840's, Henry moved his family to Shelby County, Ohio, near Anna.
The early records of St. Jacob's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Anna, lists the family name as being Britzius. Eventually the name was anglicized to Bretches.
Jacob married Lydia Ann Shaffer, born: November 16, 1841, Franklin Township, Shelby County, Ohio, daughter of Samuel and Salome (Moothart) Bretches. The Rev. George Spangler, pastor of St. Jacob;s Evangelical Lutheran Church performed the ceremony on January 20, 1856, Marriage Book: 4, page: 7.
In 1869, the Jacob Bretches family moved to Macon County, Illinois and to Kansas 1872, settling near Radical City, Sycamore Township, Montgomery County. Jacob was a cooper and farmer. He was United States citizen and could read and write.
Jacob and Lydia enjoyed family gatherings in their home with their children and grandchildren. All families brought food. Jacob kept bee hives and Lydia kept honey filled in a covered butter glass dish on the table.
In the back of the house was a big unattached summer kitchen. this large area was paved with fieldstones to the well with oak buckets. Lydia's flower beds were here. the children liked to play in the grape arbor, orchard or barn.

Jacob and Lydia were the parents of fourteen children, all but one lived to maturity and had issue. Six children were born near Anna, Ohio.

Lydia Ann Shaffer died February 19, 1925, 84 years, four months and three days, in the home of her son, Bill Bretches, Elk City, Elk County, Kansas. She is buried by her husband.
Their decendants are scattered thoughout the country and some still live in Montgomery and Wilson Counties.

Jacob Bretches - Obituary
Jacob Bretches was born in Germany December 14, 1827 and died at home of his daughter, Mrs. L. S. Morgan April 11, 1912. He came to Ohio with his parents at the age of five. Was married to Lydia Shaffer Januaryn20, 1856 in State of Ohio. At the age of twenty became a member of the Lutheran Church and later joined with the United Brethren Church in which he a faithful member until his death, putting his trust in the Lord and believing he would enter where paring ever comes. He leaves a loving wife and twelve children to mourn his death, two daughters having gone on before. He was laid to rest in the Round Mound Cemetery, funeral services conducted by Rev. J. M. Rogers of Elk City.
