October 16, 1937 - July 2, 2022

Donald Leon Bales, age 84, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

Don was the self-proclaimed mayor of L.A. - Lower Atkins. He had a way of letting you know how much he liked you, or didn't. He served his country working in defense at Brunswick and was very proud of his time there. Don had a great sense of humor, or not, depending on who was there or where he was. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Lelia Bales; wife Nancy Bales; brothers, James Eugene Bales, Jack Gayle Bales and Roger Dale Bales.

Don is survived by his brother, Larry Bales and wife, Carolyn of Abingdon, Va.; special nephew, Matt Bales and wife, Jennifer of Marion, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Nona Sheets of Marion, Va.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 8, 2022 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Wassum Cemetery, Atkins, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 a.m. to follow in procession.
