John was the first husband of Catherine "Katie" Calhoun, married in 1887.

Greetings: He was elected along with William Clyde Thompson to represent the Texas Choctaws that removed from the Mount Tabor Indian Community in Rusk & Smith counties in east Texas to the Chickasaw Nation. His case and W.C. Thompson was combined in the William C. Thompson et al vs Choctaw Nation (MCR File 7124, MCR File 341, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Muskogee, Oklahoma).

This case led to 70 Texas Choctaws being placed upon a reinstatement list and their descendants eligible to be members of the Choctaw Nation. His Dawes Roll number is 16069.

His father was part of Texas Units fighting under the organizations of John Martin Thompson art Bellview (Mt. Tabor Comm) Rusk County, Texas. John Sr. was killed at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry in Saline County, Arkansas on April 30, 1864.
