Albert John "Al" Lieber was born in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of film maker Peter Carl Lieber and Gertrude Lucille (Siebert) Lieber. He was named for his paternal grandfather, Albert Lieber, a prominent Indianapolis brewer.

He married Marilyn Ann Myers on 27 Mar 1966 in Santa Clara, California.

They adopted their son in 1972, naming him after Al's cousin, author Kurt Vonnegut.

Al spent his childhood in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona where he became interested in science. He graduated from Cal Tech and earned a PhD in nuclear physics from the University of Washington.

Albert Lieber's career included time at Princeton University in New Jersey, N.A.S.A.'s Ames Research Center in California, Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, and General Atomics in San Diego, CA.

Al was a physicist, inventor, and skilled craftsman. He was an expert in high-speed streak camera photography and held several patents. He enjoyed cabinet making and DIY home projects. He lived for over 40 years in Del Mar, California.
