Miss Mary J. Werst, the beloved daughter of Mrs. J.C. Werst, was born in Jefferson County, Kansas, February 14, 1878, and died of pneumonia, January 30, 1895; aged 17 years, 11 months and 16 days. She was an affectionate daughter, a loving sister and a friend to all that knew her. The body of the deceased was placed in the Osawkie cemetery January 31.

Mary thou wast mild and lovely,
Gentle as the summer breeze;
Pleasant as the air of evening,
When it floats among the trees.

Dearest Mary, thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel;
But 'twas God that hath bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.

Pale and cold we saw thee lying,
In God's temple once so dear,
And the mourners bitter sighing
Falls unheeded on thine ear.

Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is fled,
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tear is shed,
A FRIEND.
