Broadway, film and television star. Born in Bicester in Oxfordshire, he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and made his Old Vic stage debut in 1946. He spent most of the 1950s appearing in broad comedy roles in Britain and then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. He then returned to Broadway where he appeared primarily in American plays and thirty films as well as television. He was beaten to death near his vacation home in Sousa, Dominican Republic. He is buried in an unmarked grave near his home in Sousa.
