Merle H. Taylor Sr., 80, Ottawa, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Richmond Care Center.

He was born Dec. 8, 1927, at Chanute to Elvin T. and Mary (Hubbard) Taylor.

He moved to Ottawa in 1958 from Douglas County.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 as an engineer.

He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ottawa, for 37 years. He served as a teacher and board member. He also was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Ottawa.

He worked as a self-employed carpenter. He also worked at Hercules Sunflower Ammunition Plant and Commodore Mobile Homes. In addition, he was a school crossing guard at Eugene Field Elementary School for 15 years.

He married Elizabeth Anne Elder March 19, 1949, at Ottawa. She preceded him in death Sept. 8, 2000. He married Glenda Faye (Gieber) Elder June 2, 2001, at Ottawa. She survives.

Survivors also include sons, Merle "Oscar" Taylor Jr., and his wife, Dixie, Ottawa, and Thomas E. Taylor Sr., and his wife, Betty, Williamsburg; stepsons, Jack "Randy" Elder Jr., and his wife, Connie, Tulsa, Okla., Willie Elder, and his wife, Linda, Ottawa, Barry D. Elder, Lawrence, and Dennis C. Elder, Ottawa; a stepdaughter, Teresa L. Wheat, and her husband, Brad, Ottawa; brothers, Cloyde Taylor, and his wife, Priscilla, Meriden, and Doyle Taylor, and his wife, Peggy, Corvallis, Ore.; sisters, Mary Alice Wolter, Springfield, Ore., Bonnie Close, Ottawa, and Penit Green, Earlington, Ky.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 16 step grandchildren; 26 step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Joe Taylor Sr.; a stepdaughter, Joyce Vogeler; brothers, J.L. Taylor and Floyd Richard Taylor; sisters, Velma Sheler and Viola Riemer; an infant sister, Lydia Taylor; and a great-grandson, Dominick Taylor.
