Mary Othella (Arnold) Gipson, age 99, died of natural causes at the General Baptist Nursing Home on Sunday, July 10, 2022. Born December 20, 1922, at Cotton Hill, Dunklin County, Missouri, just west of Tallapoosa, she is survived by her daughter, Gayla Johnson of Campbell, Missouri, and son Ken Tanner (Rose) of Canandaigua, NY. Mary is also survived by five grandchildren -Clint Gipson of Holcomb, Gage Johnson (Ashely) of Plymouth, Minnesota, Ken Tanner, Jr. (Cathy) of Knoxville, Tennessee., Brady Tanner (Alyssa) of Memphis, Tennessee, Amy Elise Tanner of Memphis, Clint Gipson of Holcomb, Missouri, her half-brother, Don Arnold, of Puxico, Missouri, brother-in-law Jimmie Gipson (Vikki) of Piggott, Arkansas, and sister-in-law Jena Lee Koehler of St. Louis, Missouri. She also leaves behind three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Gipson, her oldest son, Carl Tanner, her brother, Carl Arnold, her mother, Alma Eaton, her father, Ben Arnold, her grandmother, Dora Harris, and step-grandfather, Sam Ryan, with whom she lived from eight years old until she married.

Born into a farming family during the Great Depression, Mary knew nothing but hard work all her life. There are lyrics in a song that is perfect for her:

The seasons come, the seasons go

And the only thing we've ever owned

Is this old house here by the road.

Mary spent much of her life in a cotton patch somewhere… picking and chopping cotton. When the picking became automated, she found factory work. She still found time to put food on the table for her family.

Through all the work and hardship, Mary delighted in home life when all the Gipson's gathered for a holiday. She was an excellent baker, and the delicious pies would cover the table. Husband Herman was born on the Fourth of July, and he loved homemade ice cream. Mary would mix up the ice cream solution and all the kids would take turns cranking out the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, and other flavors that Herman would request. People overflowed the house and food overflowed the table. There was always her delicious, sweet tea, fried chicken, ham and too many delicious dishes to recall. Since they also grew watermelons, they never lacked for a cold slice of melon. The Thanksgiving table was a sight to behold. She loved watching her children and grandchildren grow into adults. Whether retired or still working, it seems that they all inherited her work ethic.

Graveside service will be on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Campbell with her nephew, Gary Terrell, officiating. Burial will immediately follow.

25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" 27She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world."

John 11:25-27

Landess Funeral Home and Crematory of Campbell will be in charge of the arrangements.
