Carrell Gene Day, age 74, of Loma Linda, Missouri, passed away at 5:06 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2022, at Freeman West Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Washburn, Missouri, to the late Burness Albert "Cap" and Mary Louise "Dolly" (Dishon) Day.

Carrell "Gene" proudly served as crew chief for United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Purple Heart medals along with many other prestigious awards, including the Presidential Bronze Star. It was said that he flew more combat missions than anyone else in his platoon, finishing his 4-year tour as a Sergeant. On June 6, 1970, he married Joy Anise Smith in Independence, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2022.

Carrell obtained his master's degree in education and was only five classes away from his doctorate in education when he retired in 2002. He worked as an elementary teacher, starting in Granby, Missouri, and continuing for many years in several places and over several states. After moving back to Missouri in 1982, Carrell began teaching in the Waynesville R-VI school district. Several years later, he transitioned from teacher to elementary Principal/administrator. Even though they were part of the Waynesville school district, both schools he was an administrator for were located on the Army base in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. In addition to his career in education, Carrell pastored a local church in Dixon, Missouri.

Carrel was a remarkably busy man and could still find all the time in the world to devote to his family. His daughters have fond memories of traveling on long-distance vacations in the summer, fishing whenever they wanted, and summer float trips with their church family, to name a few.

Survivors include his two daughters; one sister, Carolyn Day of Hanibal, Missouri; and six grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Joy, his grandson, Michael Day, four sisters, and five brothers preceded him in death.
