Baby Minnie's History

Johann G. Schultz (1809 - 17 May 1881) married Caroline Zastrow [Sastrow] (2 Oct 1812 - 23 Apr 1877) about 1836 in Zimmerhausen, Pomerania, Prussia (today Mechowo, Gryfice, Poland). Johann and Caroline had five children:

Hannah Schultz Fernan (10 May 1837 - 21 Aug 1888)
Wilhelmine Caroline Louise Schultz Koeller (15 Oct 1839 - 21 Jul 1916)
Alwine Schultz Ross (15 Sep 1845 - 17 May 1902)
Carine Schultz Schmidt (10 Feb 1850 - 15 Feb 1880)
Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Schultz (24 Sep 1852 - 19 Aug 1885)

Johann and Caroline and their five children immigrated to the United Stares of America aboard the ship Eustace sailing from Hamburg to Quebec 1 Apr 1857 - 6 Jun 1857, ship's register 9 Jun 1857. The trip took longer than normal for this time period because there was a collision with the ship Bark England of Liverpool. Eustace may have stopped for repairs. For what details are known see Johann's profile gallery items on Ancestry.

The family settled in Lemont, Cook, Illinois, USA. Johann G. Schultz purchased, on a warranty deed from Charles E. Boyer and wife, 38.85 (or 38.52) acres in Lemont:
【Cook Co, Lemont Twp.; E Fractional 1/2 SW Fractional 1/4 of Sec 30, Twp 37. N Range 11 E of the 3rd principal meridian】

This land was their family farm and home and contained the farm house that is shown in that old photo of Elizabeth with her children.

Caroline died 23 Apr 1877.
Johann died 17 May 1881.

The farm passed to their son Carl Wilhelm Friedrich ("Charles") Schultz who was 28 years old at the time of his father's death. Carl W.F. married Elizabeth Sarah ("Lizzie") Goetschel on 28 May 1877 in Joliet, Will, Illinois. Carl and Elizabeth had five children:

Wilhemina May ("Minnie") Schultz (22 Feb 1879 - 1881)
Anna Elizabeth Schultz Norton Ellingson (15 May 1880 - 13 Nov 1960)
Charles Casper Schultz (12 Jun 1881 - 18 Nov 1966) [Grandpa Charles]
Amelia Lenora ("Nora") Schultz Frey (11 Mar 1883 - 26 Mar 1955)
John Arther Schultz (26 Jul 1885 - 24 Feb 1966) [he married Jennie's sister Julia]

The 1880 census lists Johann G. Schultz, Carl W.F. Schultz and Elizabeth, and two children ("Minnie", age 1 and unnamed baby age 1/12 which is Anna) all living in Lemont together. Caroline (Johann's wife) was already deceased. Carl and Elizabeth's children Charles, Nora, and John not yet born. The date this census was taken was 17 Jun 1880.

Carl W.F and Elizabeth Schultz's 1st child, Wilhemina ("Minnie"), died sometime in 1881 according to Elizabeth's Bible. However, no month and day were noted.

Johann died 17 May 1881.

John ("Jack") Schultz ( d. 19 Jul 2000), John Arthur Schultz and Julia Daley Schultz's son, was the last living relative to be interviewed be Arlette Frey Hall (Nora's granddaughter) in 1995. John ("Jack") stated his great-grandparents (Johann and Caroline) and their grandchild baby Wilhemina, and possibly Johann's parents are all buried in the one-acre Saint Matthew Lutheran Cemetery on 127th Street in Lemont, Illinois. It is quite likely given that this Cemetery is no more than 1/4 mile from where the farm sat. Saint Matthew Cemetery is now under the care of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemont which is located ~2 miles northeast of the Cemetery. The Cemetery predates the church though, and there are few, if any, records of early burials in this plot of land. Death certificates were not required at this time, and a search of both Will and Cook county Illinois records found no death certificates for any of them. The deaths were likely recorded in church records which have since been lost.

Carl W.F. Schultz died 18 Aug 1885. He is buried at Lockport Cemetery in Lockport, Illinois. When Carl W.F. died, the farm in Lemont passed to his wife Elizabeth.

Elizabeth remarried in 1886 to Herman Edward (E. Herman) Smith. Elizabeth and Herman had three children:

Emeline Caroline Smith Goetschel (12 Nov 1889 - 12 Sep 1915)
Elizabeth Flora ("Lizzie") Smith Stelling (7 Nov 1881 - 9 Aug 1964)
Marie Laura (or Edna*) ("Mae") Smith Karst (30 Sep 1896 - 22 Oct 1941)
*Elizabeth's Bible records aunt Mae's middle name as Laura; her middle name is shown as Edna on at least some of her children's birth certificates and her descendents insist they always knew it as Edna.

Charles Schultz married Jennie Mabel Daley on 3 May 1905 in Lockport, Will, Illinois. Charles and Jennie had seven children:

Mabel Sarah Schultz Bressler (24 Apr 1906 - 13 Jul 1996)
Pearl Jane Schultz Nulton (19 Sep 1907 - 9 Feb 1993)
Grace Elizabeth Schultz Yates (21 Nov 1909 - 6 Jan 1998)
Laura Margaret Schultz Rhoden James Frazier Lovell Williams (5 Aug 1912 - 3 Oct 2003)
Charles Casper ("Charlie") Schultz (4 Nov 1914 - 27 Sep 2001)
Arthur Emmerson ("Art") Schultz (4 Oct 1917 - 6 Dec 1999)
Everett Edward ("Ray") Schultz (9 Mar 1920 - 15 Jul 1928)

Jennie died on 16 Mar 1920 from septicemia following Everett's birth. Charles moved to OK and married Emma Jane Reed on 27 Feb 1924. Charles and Emma had no children.

Elizabeth retained possession of the Lemont farm until 27 Apr 1923 when she sold it to five Klappa's family members.

Elizabeth died 12 Feb 1940.
