Shirley J. Kurtz passed peacefully in her home on July 03, 2022.

She was born April 09, 1931 the daughter of the late Carrie and John Hanshue.

Shirley grew up in Union Deposit, graduated from Hershey High School in 1949, and received her Registered Nurse Degree from Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.

In 1953, she wed her high school sweetheart: Gethin (Joe) Kurtz of Hershey.

Shirley and Joe raised four children moving from Hershey to Florida, Texas, Wilkes-Barre, and then settled in Harrisburg in 1966.

By 2000, the couple fulfilled a life-long dream and built their retirement home on the Pamlico Sound in Southern Shores, North Carolina.

Shirley took great joy in volunteering in the community and her local parish and was a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Redeemer Church By the Sea, North Carolina. Shirley's zest for life was contagious. She kept in touch with lifelong friends and reached out to help others.

She lost her beloved husband and companion in 2011 and returned to Harrisburg in 2013 to be closer to friends and family.

For nearly nine years, Shirley valiantly battled cancer - her upbeat attitude and will to live was an inspiration to all.

She loved gardening, was an avid bridge player, and hiked over 1,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail from N. Tennessee to Vermont.

Shirley served as a Girl Scout Leader, Camp Nurse, Camp Director, and served on the local Girl Scout Council Board.

An enthusiastic sports fan, she never missed a Steelers or Penn State game.

Shirley's cheerful smile and generous spirit will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by family and the many friends who were touched by her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years: LTC Gethin J Kurtz in 2011; and, her brother: John Hanshue.

Shirley is survived by her daughters: Katherine (Steven) Grieco, Carol (Frank) Staats, and Rebecca (Jeffrey) Graham; her son: Michael (Deborah) Kurtz; her granddaughters: Courtney (Jason) Egal, Lauren (Attila) Kovacs, Lara Grieco (Bob Stewart), Elizabeth (Tim) Mallen, and Nina Staats; her grandsons: Joshua Kurtz, Michael Kurtz, David Grieco, Keith Staats, and Indiana Graham; her fourteen great-grandchildren, her great-great-grandson; her brother: Robert Hanshue; her nieces and nephews; and, her in-laws.
