Raub Ulric Mathias
September 30, 1927 - July 6, 2022

VISTA ---
Raub U. Mathias, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, after a short illness at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughter Cheryl (David) Herring and son Alan (RaNae), and grandchildren Scott Herring, Alison Bambauer (David), and Andy Mathias.

His life included service in the U.S. Army in Okinawa during the Korean conflict, after which he graduated from Pepperdine University and Cal State L.A., where he received his Master's Degree in education. He served the education community in Montebello and Vista, CA, first as a teacher and then as an administrator. In Vista, beginning in 1967, he was principal at Beaumont, Monte Vista, and Olive Elementary Schools. After retiring in 1986, he continued to assist VUSD in several capacities, including GATE testing and as interim principal. His caring personality and "old school" ways made him a favorite amongst staff and students who knew him. As an administrator, he made it a goal to know every student's name and write it on every child's report card, regardless of grades!

He was a long-time member of the Vista United Methodist Church and served on many committees within the church. He was also a member of Vista Masonic Lodge #687, Sunrise Vista Kiwanis (Charter President), and the North County Model Railroad Association (an interest he shared with grandson Andy).

He loved sports, playing baseball for Huntington Park High School and later Pepperdine University. He coached Little League Baseball for two years, winning titles in both years. He still loved to follow his beloved Padres and San Diego State Athletics (Go Aztecs!)

He was a talented musician. In his early years, he was a classically trained pianist. Although his life changed course, he still maintained a high level of ability until his passing. He participated in choir and handbell choir at VUMC. His love of music was passed on to his children, who he supported their musical endeavors through college. Through the years, Raub remained a contributor to SDSU bands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raub and Martha Mathias, his brother Joseph, and his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou, who passed away in 2005. He was reunited with a former classmate, Marilyn McCall Gardner, at a high school reunion. They were married in 2007 and enjoyed their last fifteen years together, traveling and celebrating family.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for September 10th at the Vista United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Vista United Methodist Church general fund and the Sunrise Vista Kiwanis Holiday book drive.

He will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.
